What is World Book Day?
World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading.
World Book Day is typically celebrated in the UK and Ireland on in early March, though most other countries celebrate World Book Day on annually on 23rd April.
Designated by UNESCO as a worldwide
celebration of books and reading, World Book Day is marked by over 100
countries, bringing together publishers, booksellers, schools and many,
many other parties to promote reading for the personal enrichment and
enjoyment of all.
In the UK, many schools participate in the day,
encouraging kids to explore the pleasures of reading. Thanks to sponsorship and the cooperation of many participating book retailers,
school children typically receive a £1 book token (1.5 Euro in Ireland) which
can be exchanged for one of six specially published £1 World Book Day
books, or used towards any book or audio book at participating bookshops
or book clubs.
...and in case you were wondering why the UK and
Ireland celebrate World Book Day on a different day to most of the rest
of the world, it is to ensure that the day always happens in term time
to enable schools to participate and support the initiative, enabling
them to host many fun events for their pupils.
