Tips for finding fetes, fairs and community events on these forums
As the number of community events, school fairs, village fetes, fireworks displays etc grows on this forum, it can seem difficult to find what you're looking for. The good news is that there are two simple search tools you can use: the tags feature and the search function.
1. Browse by tags
Many forum posts have "tags" added to them by the person who posted the item. The tags (if any) can be seen at the bottom of each post - see screenshot below.
To browse posts using tags, go to the browse all tags page and use the "tag cloud" to find posts with the things you are looking for. To quickly get to a manageable list, try selecting the year first and then the county or the type of event (eg fair, fete, fireworks etc)
It's worth noting that browsing using tags is quick and simple, but only works for discussion board posts that have been tagged by the user that created the post...so some relevant posts may not come up in these searches.
2. "Search Discussions"
Probably the easiest way to search for community events near you, regardless of whether or not they have relevant tags) is to use the discussion board search function - look for the "Search Discussions" near the top right of this page
Use combinations of keywords to get a sensible list of options eg fete warwickshire 09, firework london 08, carnival kent 08. Remember that the search function will only find words that you use in the search term - fete will almost certainly bring up different results to fair or fayre.
Tips for getting the best results:
- don't use too many words in the search term - only matches which include all the words will appear
- do use a year as one of the search terms...but only use the last 2 digits eg 09, 09 rather than 2008, 2009
- do use a town or county in the search term
- do use singular rather than plural eg fete not fetes, firework, not fireworks
