The whole of Bernwood forest was designated as a Forest Nature Reserve in 1981 because of its richness as a butterfly habitat. Recently 40 species have been recorded breeding in the forest, making it one of the most important sites in Britain. The forest and some adjoining fields are designated a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'. A fantastic forest to visit in July when most of the butterflies are flying.
