When is Chinese New Year in 2018?

The Chinese New Year in 2018 falls on Friday 16th February and is the year of the Dog

Those born in the year of the dog are believed to be conservative and full of justice. Because of their loyalty, Dogs are valued in the workplace. They rarely break rules, except for people important to them. In life, they only wish to live quietly with their family

What is the Chinese New Year and how is it celebrated?

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year is a centuries old tradition, steeped in many myths and customs.

Celebrated on the new moon between 21 Jan and 20 Feb, Chinese New Year celebrations run from the preceding evening right through to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month.

A time to honour deities and ancestors, the Chinese New Year is celebrated in other Asian countries and is a major holiday for the Chinese. Due to China's huge population, the Chinese New Year is one of the world's largest festivals and as so many Chinese traditionally return home to their families from abroad or other parts of the country, the Chinese New Year is claimed to be the world's largest annual mass human migration.

Chinese New Year celebrations and customs vary widely.

The evening preceding Chinese New Year, Chinese families often gather for an annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional  - and not just because guests are coming - for families to thoroughly clean their house in order to sweep away ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck.

Windows and doors are typically decorated with red paper inscribed with characters for "good fortune", "happiness", "wealth" and "longevity".

The lighting of lighting firecrackers is very popular as is giving money (in even numbers as odd numbers are associated with funerals) in red paper envelopes - especially from couples and young adults to children.

In 2019, the Chinese New Year will be on Tuesday 5th February and will celebrate the year of the Pig
